I was a natural-born list-maker. That's just how my mind seems to work. I have notebooks full of random, nonsensical lists of things ranging from "songs to listen to while shopping for shoes online" to "things to eat before math tests" (these both actually exist -- Labels or Love by Fergie always puts me in the mood to shop on Zappos and wheat toast topped with almond butter and banana slices always helps me remember pesky formulas).
Anyways, now that I've over-shared about my compulsive list-making habits, let me explain my new, weekly blogging tradition. Every Friday, I'm going to share a list with you all.
For the first Friday Five, I didn't want to go all crazypants just yet, so I did something seasonally appropriate.
5 Things I Love About Fall
2) Reading books. Fall is when I re-learn how to read after that three-month long hiatus from books called summer. The weather's not awesome, so it's perfectly acceptable to curl up with a blanket and read a good book. Unfortunately, because of a little ordeal called school, I'm usually reading about kinetic energy or the Battle of Saratoga, not crazy love stories or crispy bacon (don't judge my reading choices...). I rarely get to read for pleasure, so I am going to make an effort to carve out little pockets of time this fall to do so. I picked up a few good books that hopefully I'll finish this fall -- including Joie de Vivre by Robert Arbor, and Daily Rituals by Mason Currey.
3) Pumpkin EVERYTHING. There's an unspoken rule in the food-blogging world that as soon as the first leaf falls on the sidewalk sometime around mid-September, we all must run out our front door and buy as many cans of pumpkin as we can carry home. This time of year, my Pinterest and Bloglovin' feeds BLOW UP with pumpkin-related things (and I'm totally not complaining). I'm going to be whipping up pumpkin fritters, pumpkin cream cheese on bagels, pumpkin pancakes... and of course, my special pumpkin loaf that I look forward to every fall. As you all know, my favorite spice in the world is cinnamon, and cinnamon pairs perfectly with pumpkin. (dark chocolate chips also pair wonderfully... double win.)
4) Building fires -- I've lived in this house for over a year, and just discovered yesterday that we have a working fireplace. Unfortunately, it's not a "real" one where I have to burn real live logs in, so there's no burning wood smell. Nevertheless, I have my wood-scented candle for that, and tbh I'm not quite the lumberjack, so I'm perfectly happy. It gets really warm and cozy, and the flames are mesmerizing. This will definitely come in handy when winter rolls around.
5) Searching for the perfect sweater-- I've taken on the quixotic task of finding the perfect sweater. I'm looking for the kind of sweater I can wear to school, wear to a nice-ish dinner, and drop off to sleep in. The kind of sweater I don't have to wear anything under because it's not the least bit itchy. The kind of sweater which has sleeves that are just a bit too long, so I can tuck my arms in it and slap people with them. The kind of sweater that doubles as a blanket when watching movies on the couch. The kind of sweater that hangs off my shoulders ever-so-slightly and doesn't pill when I wear it too long. I know it's out there somewhere. I just have to find it.
What are your favorite things about fall?
